MMA or mixed martial arts has become the fastest growing sport today. It has become a sporting event where martial artists and fighters are learning and competing combining different disciplines and techniques in search of victory. I first began studying Uechi Ryu Karate and then began studying Jujutsu long before UFC and other mixed martial arts organizations became popular. I remember when I began studying Jujutsu my Sensei had told me that someday I would become as confident fighting in close or on the ground as being on my feet with the appropriate distance that karate prefers. After many years this prophecy came true and I owe him much gratitude.

I like to think of martial arts styles as a system of self defense techniques. Often systems focus around certain strategies so they are specialized in certain areas (striking, wrestling, ground and pound, balance disruption and leverage, joint locking etc). I don't believe that you need to become great at every type of offense that is out there but you should strive to become great at some type of offense and then develop a good defense against as many types of attacks as you can. This will give you more chances to hopefully use your specialty. How many times have you seen an awesome striker fight tentatively against a superior grappler only to hesitate, not throw his strikes with confidence or commitment and then be taken down and then mauled? Similarly, this just occurred with Brock

Lesnar and Alistair Overeem, where Lesnar (a monster of wrestling with explosive takedowns) was tentative instead of explosive, and therefore, wound up a victim of Alistair`s devastating strikes. Alistair had enough confidence with his ability to hold off Brock`s tackle that he committed with his striking game plan and then won.

At my school I teach two adult classes of Uechi Ryu Karate and two adult classes of Jujutsu during the week so you can dive deep into learning both of these great arts. Then on Saturday I teach you how to combine these great arts to improve your fighting ability. Superb physical fitness is a necessity in fighting and the MMA class is designed to challenge you and get you into the best shape of your life. This class is not just for fighters, it’s for all adults who want to become better martial artists. Safety is a necessity at the Dojo and students are taught to work together to help each other improve their skills.
